Phonics and Reading Schemes
Our aim at Ormesby Primary School is that all children have a love and enjoyment of reading. We develop their reading skills by encouraging a language rich environment, surrounded by familiar books and by teaching a daily phonics lesson following the ‘Read Write Inc’ phonics scheme.
In July 2019, 76% of our Year 1 children successfully passed the national phonics assessment. By the end of Year 2, 94% of our Year 2 children had also reached the expected standard in Phonics. Whilst there were no Phonics assessments for Year 1 children in 2020 due to the pandemic, in December 2020, 86% of our Year 2 children successfully passed the national phonics screening check. In December 2021, 84% of our Year 2 children successfully passed the national phonics screening check.
In Key Stage 1, the children’s reading books are linked to the Read Write Inc phonics scheme. In Lower Key Stage 2, the children still have access to these phonetically decodable books, if this is still necessary. We use the Oxford Reading Tree scheme, augmented by the Tree Tops Reading scheme (Oxford University Press).
